Read the sermon text: Joshua 21:43-45; 13:1; 23:12-13; 24:19-20
Read the sermon summary: This Sunday we’ll take in the entire message of the book of Joshua. Why preach a whole book in one sermon? Because one of our main goals in reading the Bible is to discern the author’s intent, and zooming out helps us see Joshua’s message as a whole, especially in the context of the Old Testament and the entire Bible. What we find is a story of God’s faithfulness, Israel’s unfaithfulness, and the unresolved edges of God’s promises. On the one hand, God’s word has proven true... his people are in the land he promised. On the other hand, there is still land to be conquered, idols to be cast down, and a holy God who warns he will not forgive their sin. How do we make sense of this tension? The book itself leaves us with the question, pushing us to look beyond Joshua for the resolution.
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Jesus Thank You
Verse 1
The myst’ry of the cross I cannot comprehend
The agonies of Calvary
You the perfect Holy One crushed Your Son
Who drank the bitter cup reserved for me
Chorus
Your blood has washed away my sin
Jesus thank You
The Father's wrath completely satisfied
Jesus thank You
Once Your enemy now seated at Your table
Jesus thank You
Verse 2
By Your perfect sacrifice I've been brought near
Your enemy You've made Your friend
Pouring out the riches of Your glorious grace
Your mercy and Your kindness know no end
Bridge
Lover of my soul I want to live for You
