Read the sermon text: Judges 3:7-16:31
Read the sermon summary: As we come to the main body of the book of Judges, we see the cycle of sin and mercy play out on a grand scale. God raises up deliverers for Israel, they sin, God judges them, they cry out in their distress, and God raises up another deliverer. These deliverers are interesting characters. On the one hand, they accomplish God's purposes by delivering his people in various ways. On the other hand, most of them are deeply flawed heroes. They stumble, hesitate, make rash vows, chase their own appetites, and yet God continues to raise them up for the good of his people. What ties these deliverers together in the mind of the author? Is he simply recounting a historical narrative or is there more to the story? What do these leaders have in common and what does the author want to say to us with their character sketches?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Shout To The Lord
Verse
My Jesus my Saviour
Lord there is none like You
All of my days I want to praise
The wonders of Your mighty love
My comfort my shelter
Tower of refuge and strength
Let every breath all that I am
Never cease to worship You
Chorus
Shout to the Lord
All the earth let us sing
Power and majesty
Praise to the King
Mountains bow down
And the seas will roar
At the sound of Your name
I sing for joy
At the work of Your hands
Forever I'll love You
Forever I'll stand
Nothing compares to the promise
I have in You
