Read the sermon text: Luke 2:1-21

Read the sermon summary: In our passage this Sunday we come to the birth of Jesus. Interestingly, the narrative gives more attention to the revelation to the shepherds and their response than to the details of Jesus’ birth. There’s a contrast between things that are seemingly lowly or insignificant (manger, swaddling cloths, shepherds) and the grand announcement of the angels. In fact, only Mary has received divine revelation about her son at this point. But things won’t stay quiet much longer. In this passage we see the news starting to break out—news not about an insignificant child, but news about the Savior, who is Christ the Lord. This news will be for all the people. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What repeated words or themes do you see in this passage? What connections to the Old Testament do you notice? What are the responses of the various people in the passage?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

All I Have Is Christ

Verse 1

I once was lost in darkest night

Yet thought I knew the way

The sin that promised joy and life

Had led me to the grave

I had no hope that You would own

A rebel to Your will

And if You had not loved me first

I would refuse You still

Verse 2

But as I ran my hell-bound race

Indifferent to the cost

You looked upon my helpless state

And led me to the cross

And I beheld God's love displayed

You suffered in my place

You bore the wrath reserved for me

Now all I know is grace

Chorus

Hallelujah all I have is Christ

Hallelujah Jesus is my life

Verse 3

Now Lord I would be Yours alone

And live so all might see

The strength to follow Your commands

Could never come from me

O Father use my ransomed life

In any way You choose

And let my song forever be

My only boast is You
