Read the sermon text: Luke 2:40-52

Read the sermon summary: This Sunday, we resume our study through the book of Luke with a unique window into Jesus' childhood. As we walk through Luke's theological telling of the story of Jesus, we're learning more about who this boy is and the kind of man he will be. The author shows his intention by bookending this episode with summaries in verses 40 and 52 about Jesus' growth in wisdom and favor with God. Of particular significance is Jesus' response to his mother's question (v. 49). Though our English translations use "my Father's house" or "my Father's business," the language isn't as specific in the original language. The reader, then, like Mary and Joseph, are a bit confused at Jesus' words since they're ambiguous. We see that even from a young age, this boy will be marked by an astounding wisdom and unique connection to the Father.

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Abide

Verse 1

For my waking breath

For my daily bread

I depend on You

I depend on You

For the sun to rise

For my sleep at night

I depend on You

I depend on You

Chorus 1

You’re the way the truth and the life

You’re the well that never runs dry

I’m the branch and You are the vine

Draw me close and teach me to abide

Where the Spirit leads

As I’m following

I depend on You

I depend on You

For the victories

Still in front of me

I depend on You

I depend on You

You’re the way the truth and the life

You’re the well that never runs dry

Be my all my treasure my prize

I am Yours forever You're mine

Draw me close and teach me to abide
