Read the sermon summary: This passage marks the beginning of Jesus' ministry in Galilee, which will continue all the way to chapter 9:51 when Jesus "sets his face" to go to Jerusalem. In his hometown, Jesus goes to the synagogue on the Sabbath as usual, but when he stands up to read the scriptures, he chooses an unmistakably Messianic passage from Isaiah 61, reads it, and says that he is the one who fulfills it. What begins as amazement turns to wrath after Jesus compares himself to the prophets Elijah and Elisha, who were rejected by Israel and served Gentiles instead. In this passage, at the very start of Jesus' ministry, we see the Son of God upending religious expectations and bringing division within Israel as he begins exercising his role as the Messiah.
