Read the sermon text: Luke 5:1-11
Read the sermon summary: In our passage this Sunday we encounter the familiar story in Luke of the miraculous catch of fish. Last week we saw that Luke emphasized Jesus' authoritative word. Here again, we see Jesus is accomplishing his purposes by his word; he's preaching the "word of God," and it was at his word that Peter let down his nets. Perhaps surprisingly to us, Peter responds to the miracle not with joy, but with awe and a deep awareness of his own sinfulness in the presence of Jesus. With this awareness, Peter is now ready to be Jesus' disciple. He, James, and John receive a prophecy of sorts (they will be catchers of people), leave everything, and follow Jesus. In preparation for the sermon consider the following questions: What in the text gives us clues about the reason behind Peter's surprising response to the miracle? The word for "catching men" in verse 10 has the idea of "capturing alive" as in war. Why might Luke have used this word here?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Great Is Thy Faithfulness
Verse 1
Great is Thy faithfulness
O God my Father
There is no shadow
Of turning with Thee
Thou changest not
Thy compassions they fail not
As Thou hast been
Thou forever wilt be
Chorus
Great is Thy faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness
Morning by morning
New mercies I see
All I have needed
Thy hand hath provided
Great is Thy faithfulness
Lord unto me
Verse 2
Summer and winter
And springtime and harvest
Sun moon and stars
In their courses above
Join with all nature
In manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness
Mercy and love
Verse 3
Pardon for sin
And a peace that endureth
Thy own dear presence
To cheer and to guide
Strength for today
And bright hope for tomorrow
Blessings all mine
With ten thousand beside
