Read the sermon text: Luke 9:37-45
Read the sermon summary: Last week we were on the mountaintop as Peter, James, and John saw the glory of Jesus. They heard the voice from heaven confirm to them, "This is My Son, My Chosen One. Listen to him!" As we come down the mountain in our text this week, we might be surprised by Jesus' response to the disciples' inability to cast out a demon. He asks how long he must bear with this "faithless and twisted generation," words reminiscent of Moses and the Israelites in the wilderness. Then, when Jesus speaks of his being handed over, the disciples didn't understand. What's more, Luke tells us that it was concealed from them. In the text, we're very quickly moving towards Jerusalem and as we do so, it becomes clearer with each step that the disciples are not in a place for what's about to come.
