Read the sermon summary: In our passage for this Sunday, Martha is working hard to be a good host for a very important person. We imagine her preparing food, cleaning, and making her home a comfortable place for her guest. In her busyness, however, she becomes an accuser, first, of Jesus, then of Mary; "Lord, do you not care?," "my sister has left me to serve alone." What's more, she even goes so far as to instruct Jesus on what she sees as his responsibility, saying, "Tell her then to help me." Jesus' response shows his compassion for Martha as well as a correction. Mary has chosen the good portion. Her attention and devotion is fixed on Jesus and his word, and he will not deprive her of that. What message does this passage speak to us in our world of anxiousness and busyness? What does it mean for us to choose "the good portion"?
