Read the sermon summary: Charles Spurgeon has a humorous illustration for our passage in Luke 13:1-9. He considers the scenario of a man who chooses to travel for work on Sunday instead of going to church. Then the man gets injured in a train accident, and some respond to him, “well if you hadn’t skipped church, this wouldn’t have happened!” But what do you think? Accidents and tragedies occur all that time… are those moments of God’s judgment due to someone’s sin?
Jesus assures the crowd that God’s judgement will ultimately come in the next life, not this one. But sometimes accidents and misfortune happen, so you should be eternally prepared. Be prepared to die, “or else perish,” he says! Well, what’s the difference between dying and perishing? And what does preparation look like… preparation begins with repentance. And repentance looks like a tree bearing good fruit!
