Worship Preparation - September 20, 2026
Read the sermon text: Luke 12:49-59
Read the sermon summary: In our passage for this Sunday, the words Jesus uses to describe his mission might surprise us: he came to “cast fire” on the earth and he’s in distress until he accomplishes his baptism. Wasn’t Jesus already baptized by John? What is he referring to then? Isn’t his kingdom one of peace? Then why has he come to bring division? While verses 49-53 show us the mission of Jesus and its impact, verses 54-59 confront people with what they should do in response to his presence. Jesus’ two questions accuse the hearer: Why don’t you know how to interpret the present time? Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? In preparation for the sermon, read over the passage and consider, “What is this present time? What should I be doing about it?”
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
Great Are You Lord
Verse
You give life You are love
You bring light to the darkness
You give hope You restore ev'ry heart that is broken
And great are You Lord
Chorus
It's Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It's Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only
Bridge
And all the earth will shout Your praise
Our hearts will cry these bones will sing
Great are You Lord
