Read the sermon text: Luke 14:25-35
Read the sermon summary: Previously in Luke we saw Jesus' call to love even one's enemies. How does that match up with his words about hating those closest to us in this passage? We have also previously seen the urgency of Jesus' call to follow him. But here, he says anyone who wants to follow him should sit down and deliberate the cost of being his disciple. Interestingly, in this passage Jesus tells us who cannot be his disciple more than who can be (that phrase is repeated three times). If all this isn't confusing enough, he leaves us with a saying about salt that doesn't seem to connect to the previous teaching. What is Jesus teaching us about what it means to be his disciple? What does it mean for us to "hate" even our own lives, bear our own crosses, and say "goodbye" to all our possessions?
Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:
My Worth Is Not In What I Own (At The Cross)
Verse 1
My worth is not in what I own
Not in the strength of flesh and bone
But in the costly wounds of love at the cross
Verse 2
My worth is not in skill or name
In win or lose in pride or shame
But in the blood of Christ that flowed at the cross
Chorus
I rejoice in my Redeemer
Greatest treasure Wellspring of my soul
I will trust in Him no other
My soul is satisfied in Him alone
Verse 3
As summer flowers we fade and die
Fame youth and beauty hurry by
But life eternal calls to us at the cross
Verse 4
I will not boast in wealth or might
Or human wisdom's fleeting light
But I will boast in knowing Christ at the cross
Verse 5
Two wonders here that I confess
My worth and my unworthiness
My value fixed my ransom paid at the cross
