Read the sermon summary: Where are your table manners!? I remember hearing something like this as I was growing up when I had my elbows on the table or was hovering over my plate. In our passage for this Sunday, we might think Jesus is teaching the Pharisees about proper table etiquette, especially regarding being a good host or a good guest. However, three phrases clue us in that Jesus isn't talking about mere earthly ethics, but about realities concerning the last day. What will it take for the Pharisees to enter the kingdom of God? The questions they're confronted with confront us as well: On the last day will we be exalted or humbled? How will we be repaid? Will we taste the master's banquet?
