Read the sermon text: Luke 1:5-25

Read the sermon summary: While this first section of Luke is part of the familiar Christmas story, we have the opportunity to slow things down and consider details maybe overlooked during the Advent season. By studying Luke, we want to answer this question, “Who is Jesus?” But before we learn about Jesus, there is a prophet who precedes him. We know of this prophet-like figure as, John the Baptist. In verses 5 through 25, John’s parents (Zechariah and Elizabeth) are made aware of their unlikely pregnancy. However, the two parents respond very differently after learning this news. One responds with joy and praise for God’s faithfulness. The other responds with hesitation and doubt. Maybe these responses are similar in our own relationship to God. When you experience the goodness of God, do you respond with worship or speculation? John’s arrival is a great sign from God and there are many Old Testament themes that will help us make sense of his significance. “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare the way of the Lord!

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Promises

Verse 1

God of Abraham You're the God of covenant

Of faithful promises

Time and time again You have proven

You do just what You say

Pre-Chorus

Though the storms may come

And the winds may blow

I'll remain steadfast

And let my heart learn when You speak a word

It will come to pass

Chorus

Great is Your faithfulness to me

Great is Your faithfulness to me

From the rising sun to the setting same

I will praise Your name

Great is Your faithfulness to me

Interlude 1

Oh

Seasons change

You remain the same

Verse 2

God from age to age

Though the earth may pass away

Your word remains the same yeah

Your history can prove

There's nothing You can't do

You're faithful and true

Interlude 2

Oh Your faithfulness

It never runs out

It never runs out

Oh Your faithfulness

Oh it never runs out

(Never runs out)

It never runs out

(Never runs out)

Bridge

I put my faith in Jesus

My anchor to the ground

My hope and firm foundation

He'll never let me down

(REPEAT)

Vamp 1

From the rising sun to the setting same

I will praise Your name

Vamp 2

I'll still bless You
