Read the sermon summary: Last Sunday we saw Jesus' authority over both sickness and sin. In spite of our resistance, Jesus invites us into admitting we are poor and needy and should invite his authority over our lives. In our passage this week, we gain a deeper glimpse into who Jesus is and the purpose of his ministry. In Luke 5:27-39, Luke introduces us to a significant facet of Jesus' ministry as He engages with those who the Pharisees refer to as "tax collectors and sinners" (v. 30). As He has already shown His ability to heal the physically sick, Luke emphasizes a greater purpose in Jesus calling the spiritually sick (v. 31). Jesus exhibits the weighty call He brings to people's lives, the deeper purpose of His ministry, and the newness that He is bringing about.
