Read the sermon text: Luke 6:12-36

Read the sermon summary: We have just ended a series of sermons on the mounting conflict between Jesus and the Pharisees. They're now beginning to plan what to do to Jesus. Our next large unit is from Luke 6:12-49, a series of teachings from Jesus. However, before Jesus teaches his disciples, he spends all night in prayer and chooses those who will be called apostles. For Luke, this appears to be a reconstitution of the people of God as Jesus comes down from the mountain and brings commands to his disciples. Seen in this way, in the section from verse 12 through the end of the chapter, Jesus is teaching his followers what it looks like to be a citizen of this new kingdom he brings. In preparation for the sermon, consider the following questions: What, if anything, do you make of Jesus praying on a mountain before coming down to teach his disciples? How are verses 20-26 (the "Beatitudes") similar or different from accounts in the other Gospels? How would you describe a person who looks like Jesus' teaching in verses 27-36?

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Abide

Verse 1

For my waking breath

For my daily bread

I depend on You

I depend on You

For the sun to rise

For my sleep at night

I depend on You

I depend on You

Chorus 1

You’re the way the truth and the life

You’re the well that never runs dry

I’m the branch and You are the vine

Draw me close and teach me to abide

Verse 2

Where the Spirit leads

As I’m following

I depend on You

I depend on You

For the victories

Still in front of me

I depend on You

I depend on You

Chorus 2

You’re the way the truth and the life

You’re the well that never runs dry

I’m the branch and You are the vine

Draw me close and teach me to abide

Be my strength my song in the night

Be my all my treasure my prize

I am Yours forever You're mine

Draw me close and teach me to abide

Verse 3

When I pass through death

As I enter rest

I depend on You

I depend on You

For eternal life

To be raised with Christ

I depend on You

I depend on You

Tag 1

Would You teach me to abide

Tag 2

I depend on You
