Read the sermon text: Luke 8:22-39

Read the sermon summary: Having seen the importance of hearing rightly, we now encounter four related episodes related to faith; the calming of the storm, the healing of a man with demons, the healing of the woman with the issue of blood, and the raising of Jairus' daughter. This Sunday, we'll take the first two episodes which share the themes of fear versus faith. The disciples, who have been with Jesus, respond to Jesus in fear and even ask, Who is this who commands the storms? Do they not know yet? The demons know: He is Jesus, The Son of the Most High God. After being healed of demon-possession, the man begs to be counted as one of Jesus' disciples, but Jesus commissions him to declare how much God had done for him. The man seems to get it. He goes home and proclaims how much Jesus had done for him. This man, like the demons, knows who Jesus is. But unlike them, he responds in faith rather than fear.

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

O Praise The Name (Anástasis)

Verse 1

I cast my mind to Calvary

Where Jesus bled and died for me

I see His wounds His hands His feet

My Saviour on that cursed tree

Verse 2

His body bound and drenched in tears

They laid Him down in Joseph's tomb

The entrance sealed by heavy stone

Messiah still and all alone

Chorus

O praise the Name of the Lord our God

O praise His Name forevermore

For endless days we will sing Your praise

Oh Lord oh Lord our God

Verse 3

Then on the third at break of dawn

The Son of heaven rose again

O trampled death where is your sting

The angels roar for Christ the King

Verse 4

He shall return in robes of white

The blazing sun shall pierce the night

And I will rise among the saints

My gaze transfixed on Jesus' face
