Read the sermon text: Luke 9:1-17

Read the sermon summary: In our passage for this Sunday we see a connection between a disciple of Jesus and the identity of Jesus. For the first time, we see the twelve disciples sent out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal. They aren't just sent however. Jesus gives them the power of the Spirit and authority to complete their mission. Interestingly, we don't see the details of what they did. Instead, we see that this increased activity comes to the attention of Herod, who asks in confusion, "Who is this?" We learn that John has been beheaded; why did Luke put this here? Jesus draws his disciples aside, but the crowds follow them. When they find themselves in a wilderness with nothing to eat, Jesus commands them, "You give them something to eat." How can five loaves and two fish feed this many people? But then again, had Jesus not just raised a little girl from the dead? Had they not just returned from casting out demons and healing the sick? Patiently, Jesus shows them once more who he is. We know he is the prophet greater than Moses. But he is also the Lord who fed the Israelites manna, and who now feeds the 5,000 in the wilderness.

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

Jesus Paid It All

Verse 1

And I hear the Savior say

Thy strength indeed is small

Child of weakness watch and pray

Find in Me thine all in all

Chorus 1

'Cause Jesus paid it all

All to Him I owe

Sin had left a crimson stain

He washed it white as snow

Interlude 1

(It's washed away)

(All my sin and all my shame)

Verse 2

Lord now indeed I find

Thy pow'r and Thine alone

Can change the leper's spots

And melt the heart of stone

Verse 3

And when before the throne

I stand in Him complete

Jesus died my soul to save

My lips shall still repeat

Interlude 2

Sin had left a crimson stain

He washed it white as snow

He washed it white as snow

He washed it white as snow

Chorus 2

Oh praise the One Who paid my debt

And raised this life up from the dead

(Jesus)
